Overpriced Freewrite Devices : Expensive & Useless?
I have received comment after comment and repeated messages about how the Freewrite Smart Typewriter devices are “overpriced,” and “useless.” After having used several of the Freewrite devices for work and play, I thought I would share my opinion on these overpriced modern day typewriters.
I love hearing about other writer’s setups. Whether it’s with pen and paper, typewriters, or modern devices. I enjoy learning about different ways to write! So, I find it interesting when methods are criticized rather than input being given.
Are the Freewrite Devices Overpriced?
A recurring comment is that the Freewrite devices are just flat out overpriced and they never would have sold in the 1900s because they would have been unattainable. Hemmingway didn’t have this device so why should we use it?

The Freewrite can be considered the modern day typewriter. Looking back at typewriters through the decades the prices reflected detail and function of the product as well as inflation. Looking at the 1930s-1940s the average typewriter would have cost $50-$60. Adjusted for inflation today you’re looking at over $800! Going into the 1950s the average price of a typewriter was closer to $100 with $150 getting you a more heavy duty model. Adjusted for inflation that’s $1500+! It would have cost you more to but the average typewriter model midcentury than it is to buy a Freewrite device today!
I think that puts the price of the Freewrite into perspective.
As far as the value of the device to me? The Freewrite is a great device. I have loved mine. Sure, it would be great for the devices to be a less expensive writer’s tool but it is what it is. I think that the value I have received from using them pays for the cost of the device. I also think that if you’re looking for a daily diary and this seems like the device for you, it would be a great tool! It is such a good feeling getting what is stuck in your head out and in a readable format.
